In 1994, a movie called “The Shawshank Redemption” was born. It was like a shining star, shining forever in the history of the movie. Directed by Frank Delabont and starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, this film has become a classic in the history of film with its profound connotation, wonderful plot and excellent performance. The movie tells the story of banker Andy Dufresne in Shawshank Prison after being wrongfully convicted of murder and wrongfully imprisoned. Andy, who has just entered the prison, faces all kinds of darkness and injustice in the prison, with violence, corruption and despair. But he did not fall, but with his own wisdom and tenacious perseverance, in this seemingly desperate environment, he blazed a path to hope and freedom. Using a small eagle beak hammer, he spent 19 years digging a tunnel in the wall of his cell, and finally succeeded in escaping from prison and regaining his freedom. Andy’s character portrayal is nothing short of. Tim Robbins vividly interprets Andy’s inner struggle, persistence of hope and calmness in the face of difficulties. In prison, Andy has always maintained his dignity and love for life. He used his financial knowledge to help prison guards avoid taxes reasonably, and won the opportunity for his inmates to drink beer on the roof. At that moment, the sun shone on them, and they felt a long-lost freedom and dignity. Andy also worked hard to build a library for the prison. He wrote a letter every week for many years, and finally received financial support. This process not only shows his persistence, but also reflects his spread of knowledge and hope. He helped young prisoner Tommy study, encouraged him to get a high school diploma, and gave Tommy another possibility in life. Although Tommy was finally brutally murdered by the warden, Andy’s efforts were not in vain, and he planted the seeds of hope in the prison. Morgan Freeman’s Red also left a deep impression on the audience. Red has a special position in prison. He can get all kinds of outside things, and it seems that he has become numb to prison life. But Andy’s appearance broke his inner peace. He saw hope in Andy, and under the influence of Andy, he regained his confidence in life. Freeman used his unique voice and calm performance to show the complex emotions in Red’s heart. From his initial curiosity about Andy, to later becoming Andy’s best friend, to finally taking brave steps to pursue freedom under Andy’s encouragement, Red’s character growth line is clear and moving. In terms of audio-visual language, the film has also reached a very high level. The portrayal of the prison scene in the film is extremely realistic. The dim cells, long corridors, and icy walls all create a depressing atmosphere that makes the audience feel as if they are there. And when Andy plays the opera “The Marriage of Figaro,” the music echoes in the prison, and the prisoners stop what they are doing and immerse themselves in the beautiful melody. At this moment, the camera slowly sweeps across the faces of each prisoner. The complex expressions on their faces show a yearning for beauty and a desire for freedom. This scene brings the film’s emotions to a climax through the perfect combination of music and picture. The theme of the film is profound and thought-provoking. It explores the meaning of hope, freedom and redemption. Andy never gave up his pursuit of hope in prison. He used his actions to tell us that no matter how bad the environment is, as long as there is hope in his heart, he will be able to find a way out. His escape from prison is not only a physical escape, but also a spiritual redemption. And Red, under the influence of Andy, has also completed his self-redemption. He has changed from an institutionalized prisoner to a person who can face life bravely. The movie also reveals the complexity of human nature. The wardens and guards in the prison will do anything for their own interests to show the dark side of human nature; and the friendship between Andy and his cellmates shows the warmth and kindness of human nature.
In the prison yard, Andy’s eyes still revealed hope for the future despite his predicament. “The Shawshank Redemption” has received numerous accolades and awards since its release. It has received seven nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay at the 67th Academy Awards, and two nominations for Best Actor and Best Screenplay in a Feature Film at the 52nd Golden Globe Awards. On the occasion of its 25th anniversary, the film was re-screened in some theaters in North America in September 2019, which once again aroused enthusiastic responses from audiences. The film’s enduring charm is not only an entertainment work, but also an artistic masterpiece that can touch people’s hearts, give people strength and inspiration. It allows us to believe that hope can never be lost, even in the darkest hour, and that if we have the courage to pursue freedom, we can achieve self-redemption.
